Job Title: Dragonfly predation summer intern
Added here on 1 Mar 2010

The Combes Lab (www.oeb.harvard.edu/faculty/combes) in Harvard University’s Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology is looking for undergraduate applicants for a 10 week paid internship conducting research on the biomechanics, behavior, and ecology of dragonflies. Interns will play a crucial role in a novel investigation into the links between biomechanical aspects of flight behavior (e.g. such as wing morphology, flight velocity, acceleration) and prey capture success among dragonflies, one of nature’s most successful aerial predators.

Interns will be responsible for conducting experimental predation trials, collecting behavioral information and multi-camera video sequences of predation attempts, and conducting field observations of wild dragonfly populations. Interns will also help in data analysis and various other tasks involved with the research. The internship is located at Harvard’s Concord Field Station, in Bedford, MA (~35 minutes from downtown Boston), where predation trials are conducted in a recently constructed outdoor greenhouse that serves as an artificial dragonfly habitat.

Preference will be given to those applicants with background and interest in biology, ecology, and engineering, although applicants from various backgrounds are encouraged to apply. A valid driver’s license is a plus, as is fieldwork experience.

For more info, contact:

Please direct all inquiries to James Crall (jcrall@oeb.harvard.edu), and include a letter of interest as well as a resume or CV highlighting relevant background and skills.

Job Type: full-time temporary position
in burned and unburned areas of desert tortoise habitat to determine its
suitability as food and cover for tortoises, and to inform management
decisions. Two-person teams have sampled designated study sites using
standard methods during March and May, and these sites will be sampled again
in August. The Field Technician will be trained in standard vegetation
sampling techniques. Other project-related activities, such as sample
processing and data management, will take place in the Mesquite-based field
office during non-sampling times. Opportunities to support related projects
in southern Nevada may also be available. This project will require
